Confirmation

Confirmation is a special time in which students are led by the pastor and have the opportunity to discern and articulate their personal faith. It is offered as needed for the youth in our congregation beginning with the 7th Grade. If you have a child who is eligible and desires to participate in a confirmation class, please contact the pastor.

Confirmation is about Belonging

Through the confirmation process, students may become full members of FPC. The confirmation program is an experience-based process with instruction focused on Scripture, the beliefs of our faith tradition, the nature of the Church, and the shape of the Christian life. If a participant was not baptized as an infant, they are usually baptized as part of Confirmation. After the participants are confirmed there is cake and a celebration in Fellowship Hall.

Confirmation is about Commitment

The church’s desire to take this time with our kids is based on three things:

  • Our baptismal promise to nurture the faith of our children.

  • The belief that God is at work in the world, including in our children, and we have an opportunity to teach each other.

  • Adolescence, in particular, has opportunities and challenges. These need to be explored and nurtured.

Confirmation is about questions

Confirmation is the beginning of a life of faith process. It is one in which we wrestle with big questions, including questions of who we are, who God is, and how the two intersect and exist. Reflection is necessary throughout our life as we continue to walk through our own faith journey.

As an adolescent, the search for answers to these questions could seem impossible. With the guidance from the pastor and congregation, Confirmation allows for a time of growth and a chance to develop a passion for lifelong learning, showing the life of faith is forever growing and not just a single class. Hopefully, participants will begin to answer the many important questions they have including: Where am I going? What is the world about? How do I know what to do with this moment and the time ahead of me?

Confirmation seeks to provide enough space to be able to ask these questions of God, of ourselves, of each other, and of the church. This is a perfect time to equip our children with the tools needed to pay attention to God and reflect as they go on life’s way. This is perhaps one of the most important life lessons we can teach them.
