First Presbyterian offers a wide variety of local mission opportunities.
We have a vital relationship with the Watertown Urban Mission. Together we offer Dollar Dinners at the church, participate in food, clothing, school supply and funding drives, as well as volunteer on a regular basis in the food pantry and thrift store.
For 2016 our summer project entailed assisting Dexter Presbyterian Church with repairs to its foundation. Volunteers helped prepare for excavation and assisted masons in replacing the stones and masonry. Our efforts in 2017 at Dexter will be from July 25-27. We will be replacing windows in the kitchen and fellowship hall, along with minor repairs and painting as time allows. Previous summers from 2010 to 2015 have seen us engage the community in a week-long rehabilitation project in the city called Building Blocks. We performed a variety of tasks. We repaired foundations, painted homes, installed siding, rehabilitated kitchens and baths and replaced decks and porches. We found projects through Neighbors of Watertown and leveraged a partnership with the YMCA and Immaculate Heart's youth to make this a true community effort.
We host the Mental Health Association in our kitchen on Tuesdays and Thursdays where their clients prepare a meal as a means of therapy.
First Presbyterian is blessed with a vibrant deacon board made of members who devote themselves to caring for the homebound, to fellowship, and to acts of kindness for the hurting. The deacons meet each month. During these meetings, they hear concerns about members in need of help, plan special events like a fundraising auction or consider how to help others such as a leaf raking project in the spring or fall. A term on the deacon board is three years and the term is renewable once.
